Counselor FAQs

What kinds of learning disabilities do the students have?

Summer Program students’ diagnosis often included language-based learning disabilities, dyslexia, auditory processing difficulties, and/or ADD/ADHD. Morning academics, as well as afternoon and evening social activities help them prepare for the school year ahead. The Gow School Summer Program does not serve students with primary oppositional, emotional, or behavioral disorders.

What is the typical daily schedule?

What are typical duties for a counselor?
From morning to evening, counselors are these children's parents, coaches and all-encompassing supervisors. They wake them up, help them to learn new activities during the day, and put them to bed in the evenings.

How long is the Summer Program?
The students are on campus for five weeks. Counselors are required to take part in a one-week staff orientation session before the program begins. This training covers team building, daily expectations, and strategies to deal with students in difficult situations. Counselors may depart shortly after the conclusion of the program. Individual contracts outline exact dates of employment.

What clothing will I need to bring with me?
Counselors should be dressed for fun. They may wear athletic or khaki shorts on a daily basis. Temperatures are usually 80 degrees F during the summer with occasional rain.

How many counselors are at the Summer Program?
There are about twenty-five counselors, both male and female, working in the Program.

How much time off do counselors have?
Counselors will have one evening off each week, Monday – Thursday. Group Leader's schedules will differ from one group to the next. On the weekends, counselors supervise off-campus trips.

What is the pay schedule?
Pay periods are once every two weeks.
