Each year, in conjunction with National Engineers Week, the Association of Bridge Construction & Design sponsors the Kenneth T. Rybarczyk Memorial Model Bridge Contest, which is open to 7th to 12th grade students from the Western New York community. The contest offers the students a chance to build balsa wood bridges designed to have the highest efficiency rating (weight to strength ratio), to improve their teamwork skills, and most of all, have fun with their imaginations. The contest was held on February 25th at the Classics V Restaurant in Amherst, NY.
With 50 bridges represented by 113 students from six area high schools in competition, The Gow School, South Wales, NY, took first place with the balsa wood bridge they constructed on campus. Under the direction of Physics teacher, Mr. Joe Gullo, Evan '10, Shillington, PA, and Rory '10, Columbus, OH, earned first place in the contest, making this the fourth year in a row Gow has won.
