The Athlete of the Week
Each week, one student is recognized for his/her contributions to Gow’s athletic program. The recipients for the 2012-13 school year are listed below.
Conner '13 - May 13, 2013
If defense wins championships, then the Varsity Lacrosse team owes lots to this week’s Athlete of the Week, Conner S. Conner is a stalwart on the defensive front. In one game, he took the lead when Gow’s goalie had to sit out on a penalty. With a back-up in the net, Conner made sure that no shots on goal reached either the net or the goalie. Keep up the good work Conner! |

Tempel '15 - May 6, 2013
JV lacrosse player Tempel V. is May’s first Athlete of the Week. Tempel is a long stick midfielder and plays stellar defense. He is adept at picking up ground balls and at getting his passes to his offensive players with accuracy. His strong performance has led to many goals and victories for the team this season. Congratulations Tempel! |

Will '16 - April 29, 2013
Will H. shared Athlete of the Week honors for the final week in April. Will won all three of his singles matches in the Dunn Family Invitational. He stepped up into the 1st Singles spot against Orchard Park and defeated his opponent 8-1. The Ravens finished in 2nd place overall. Keep up the great work Will! |

Alex '13 - April 29, 2013
Another top performer in spring tournaments, Alex L. also earned Athlete of the Week honors. Alex scored 10 goals in five games during the Ravens Midseason Lacrosse Bash at Newfane. Gow earned a 1st place finish in the tournament with 4 wins and 1 loss. Way to go Alex! |

Lucca '17 - April 22, 2013
Modified lacrosse player Lucca H. is the Athlete of the Week. Lucca scored eleven goals in the first three games of the season. He earned Gow’s first and only goal in a loss to East Aurora, six goals in victory over Depew, and four goals in a close loss to Nardin. Congratulations Lucca! |

Zach '14 - April 15, 2013
The first Athlete of the Week for the spring season is Varsity Tennis player Zach M. Zach won two matches last week as Gow defeated Pioneer 5-0 and lost to Canisius 4-1. Playing first singles, Zach defeated his opponent from Pioneer 6-0, 6-0. Zach also defeated highly acclaimed Jake S. from Canisius 8-1 and scored Gow’s only point. |

Grant '13 - March 4, 2013
The final athlete of the week for the winter season goes to senior guard Grant S. Grant is the captain and leader of the Varsity Basketball team. In the IAC Finals, he served double duty as a fill in point guard and shooting guard. Grant scored a game high 22 points, and he finished with over 300 points for the season and over 800 points in his three year career as a starter.

William '17 - February 25, 2013
Modified Basketball player William M. is the Athlete of the Week. William exemplifies a positive attitude. He works hard in practice, as well as in games, and he will do whatever it takes for the benefit of the team. In last week’s game against Elmwood Franklin, William scored 2 points and played stellar defense under the boards. Keep it up William!

William '13 - February 18, 2013
Once again, a Raven’s wrestler is the Athlete of the Week. William H. earned a 5th place finish in the CHSAA State Championship Consolation tournament. This matches the highest ever finish for Gow in this contest. Congratulations Will!

Tyson '15 - February 4, 2013
February’s first Athlete of the Week award goes to wrestler Tyson N. Tyson competed in the MMHSAA State Qualifier Tournament and took 1st place in the 106 lb weight class. He outlasted his opponent and won by decision in a tough 6 minute, 3 round battle. Great work Tyson!

Nasser '18 - January 28, 2013
This week’s Athlete of the Week award goes to 7th grader Nasser K. Nasser is a member of the Modified Basketball team. He led the team in scoring last week with a total of 27 points over two games. Way to go Nasser!

Owen '14 - January 21, 2013
Ski racer Owen M. is the Athlete of the Week. Competing against racers from several local public schools, Owen won the first Giant Slalom race of the season at Holiday Valley. This was the first ever NYSPHSAA (New York State Public High School Athletic Association) sanctioned race in the Buffalo area. Nice job Owen!

John '13 - January 10, 2013
Squash player and Assistant Captain, John E. is the Athlete of the Week. John competed in the prestigious Buffalo Silver Invitational Tournament on January 4–6th. He won an impressive five game battle with a local player from Nichols. Despite losing in the semi-finals of the U17 consolation bracket, John came back on Sunday to capture 3rd place in another epic five game battle. John was down two games to none before battling back to win three straight games, 11-9 in the final.

Conner '13 - December 10, 2012
Mr. Szafnicki presented this week’s Athlete of the Week award to Varsity Basketball player Conner S. Conner was instrumental in shutting down Rochester’s top scorer in the team’s third victory of the season. He played most of the game on a sore ankle and still managed to keep his opponent in check. Conner’s outstanding defensive play helped the team advance their opening record to 3-1. Keep up the great work Conner!

Joe '14 - December 3, 2012
The first Athlete of the Week award for the Winter season goes to wrestler Joe '14. Joe earned a first place finish in the Orchard Park JV Tournament in the 145 lb. weight class during the first weekend in December. He posted a perfect 4-0 record. Congratulations Joe!

Penn '16 - November 5, 2012
There is a tie for the final fall Athlete of the Week Award. The first award goes to Cross Country runner Penn E. As a freshman, Penn has consistently held the #2 position on the team behind senior and veteran harrier Grant S. If he had competed in the freshman race at the end-of-the-season Monsignor Martin Championships, his time of 19:08 easily would have earned him a victory. As it was, he earned a top 20 finish in the Varsity race.

Chuck '13 - November 5, 2012
Varsity Soccer player Chuck M. also shared the final Athlete of the Week honors for the fall season. Chuck came out of nowhere in the team’s Semi-Final victory over Cardinal O’Hara. He scored twice off consecutive corner kicks and helped lead the team to a 4-1 victory. Great work Chuck! Congratulations to all of the Fall Athlete of the Week recipients and to all of the teams on a successful fall season.

The Varsity Soccer Team - October 29, 2012
For the first time in Gow School history, the Athlete of the Week Award goes to an entire team. The Varsity Soccer team’s 6-0 victory vs. Niagara Catholic sealed their record at 14-0 for the regular season. They are the first Varsity Soccer team since 1969 to go undefeated and untied. The team heads into the end of the season IAC Tournament as the first seed. Way to go Ravens!!

Mark '14 - October 22, 2012
Veteran Cross Country runner Mark C. is the Athlete of the Week. Mark is in his third year of running at Gow, and he is the captain of the team. This year Mark has earned a personal best record in his first five races, including the last home race at Emery Park. Excellent job Mark. Keep on running!

Robert '13 - October 8, 2012
October’s second Athlete of the Week Award goes to Varsity Soccer player Robert T-H. Robert leads the team in goals and assists, with 8 goals and 6 assists in the team’s six league and interleague victories. The Varsity Soccer squad is currently 8-0 overall, thanks in part to Robert’s excellent offensive skills. Keep up the great work Robert!

Saralun '17 - October 1, 2012
Modified soccer player Saralun V. is October's first Athlete of the Week. Saralun scored a hat trick (3 goals) in the team’s 4-3 win over Nardin last week. In addition to being a prolific scorer, Saralun’s coaches describe him as a real team player. Congratulations Saralun!

Todd '14 - September 24, 2012
This week’s Athlete of the Week award goes to Golfer Todd Smith. Todd is the first Gow golfer to medal in a match. He shot a 42 to lead his team to victory, 13 – 11, over Cardinal O’Hara. Todd’s hard work has paid off in a big way. Leading by example and enthusiasm, Todd’s average has dropped 10 strokes from the first to the third week of the season. Way to go Todd!

Oliver '15 - September 17, 2012
Volleyball player Oliver M. is this week’s Athlete of the Week. Oliver displayed exceptional passing skills in the team’s first outing against Canisius, and he helped to keep the team alive in all three games. Oliver’s strong play earned him a starting role, which he never relinquished throughout the match. Keep up the good work Oliver!

Jack '13 - September 10, 2012
The first Athlete of the Week Award goes to a member of our newest team on campus. Last week, in their inaugural match the Golf Team earned their first points ever, let alone this season. Jack B. made history when he scored .5 points by winning a hole in Gow’s first golf match against Canisius High School. Later in the week, Jack earned 4 more points in a draw with The Park School. Congratulations to Jack and the rest of the golf team!
