Our Residential Curriculum

This module focuses on the transition to communal living, establishing a sense of belonging, and understanding shared values.

• Establishing Routine: We teach practical life skills right away, covering everything from daily dorm routines and age-appropriate hygiene to setting up roommate agreements and managing a personal budget.
• Finding Support: Students learn the essential skill of asking for help when they need it, building trust within their new community.

The focus here shifts inward, helping students develop the self-awareness and practical habits required for true independence.

• Self-Discovery: Students explore their strengths, weaknesses, and set personal goals, helping them get comfortable with the person they are.
• Essential Life Skills: We cover fundamental tasks that build self-reliance, like laundry, keeping a clean room, and ordering food.
• Healthy Habits: Lessons focus on setting healthy boundaries and managing stress and self-care to ensure emotional and physical well-being.

This module provides students with the language and strategies to navigate disagreements constructively, a key skill for success in college and careers.

• Understanding Conflict: Students learn about different types of conflict and steps for solving conflicts using active listening and non-verbal communication.
• Practical Problem-Solving: We teach students how to handle difficult conversations and make effective decisions, all while navigating personal space during a Western New York winter.
• Digital Balance: Lessons also cover essential modern life skills, such as managing technology usage within a communal setting.

The final module prepares students for life beyond Gow by focusing on future planning, healthy relationships, and navigating major life changes.

• Growth Mindset: We explore the importance of being uncomfortable as a tool for growth.
• Preparing for the Future: Students reflect on the year and plan for what comes next, including leadership applications, choosing roommates, and time management for college.
• Healthy Relationships: Lessons cover crucial topics like romantic relationships and substance abuse, providing a safe space for mature discussion before students head into the next chapter of their lives.
