We often hear from parents whose child has struggled since elementary school. They have tried tutors, resource room help, and summer programs, and nothing has lasted. As one parent told us, "I don't want to have to switch my child's school, but we are running out of options."
If that sounds familiar, you may be tired and unsure what to do next. A school built around how your child learns can make a world of difference. The question is when to make the move.
Two Signs It May Be Time
1. Reading Isn't Improving
Your child has had extra help and support, and their reading still hasn't moved forward.
2. School Is Taking a Toll on Your Child
The struggle at school is affecting how your child feels about themselves, their friendships, or their mood.
Know Your Options
Schools for students with learning differences take different forms. Boarding high schools are usually meant for all four years of high school, with college as the goal. Other programs, often for younger students in about grades 2 to 8, are designed to last a few years before students return to a traditional school.
Is Your Child Ready?
The most successful moves happen when both parents and child are invested. Making the decision for your child, without their buy-in, rarely works. Have your child visit, talk with students and teachers, and picture themselves there.
Sometimes the timing isn't right yet, but it will be in a year or two. Choosing to wait is a brave decision too.
Do Your Research
Look at everything: websites, social media, and printed materials. Most of all, talk with current and former parents. They are your best source of honest answers.
