Study Tips for Students Who Find Executive Function Hard

A big test can feel daunting, especially if organizing, planning, and managing your time don't come easily. We asked Gow students who face those same challenges how they get ready for a big exam. Here are their five best tips.

    1. Make a Plan

A plan lays out everything you need to do. Planning may not feel natural, but students say it helps them reach their goals.

    • Ask your teachers what format the test will take, so you can picture it.
    • Use a planner to map out everything you have going on, and schedule study time for each class.
    • Plan time to meet with your teachers. At Gow, tutorial is built for exactly that.

A plan only works if you stick to it, so hold yourself to it.

    2. Rewrite Your Notes

Your notes are a preview of the test. Read them and mark any terms, formulas, or problems you aren't sure about. Those are where to spend your time. Read the unfamiliar parts silently, then aloud, again and again, until you know them. Using sight, sound, and touch together works best for many students.

    3. Make Flashcards

Flashcards are simple and effective for vocabulary, formulas, and dates. They don't help much with critical-thinking or writing questions, so decide first whether the material fits. To drill:

    • For cards you know, say the answer aloud.
    • For cards you aren't sure of, read the answer and set the card aside.
    • Keep going back to the set-aside pile until you know every card.

    4. Review Old Quizzes and Tests

Old quizzes show you the kinds of questions your teacher asks. For each mistake, find the right answer in your notes or book, and ask your teacher if you are still unsure. Try colored pens: circle the questions you know, the ones you don't, and the ones you aren't sure about. It reminds you to slow down on the tricky ones.

    5. Build Your Own Review Packet

It takes time, and it works. Look through old tests for questions that keep coming up, since they are likely to appear again. Write your own practice questions, then ask your teacher to check your answers.
