The Benefits of an Academic Summer Program

Does your child need academic support over the summer? And can that support still be fun? At the Gow School Summer Program, the answer to both is yes.

    The Best of Both Worlds

An academic summer camp can be a hard sell. For a child with a learning difference, it can also be the best choice. Campers take four classes in the morning and spend four periods on recreation in the afternoon. Afternoons give them something to look forward to, and morning classes come with no homework, tests, or quizzes.

    Social Skills

Camp takes children out of their comfort zone, safely. They meet campers from around the world and bond over a shared experience: school has been hard. For many, it is the first time they feel they belong in a classroom.

    Emotional Growth

For most campers, it is their first long stretch away from home. They may arrive nervous about leaving home and making friends. Campers who cry on the first day because they miss their parents often cry on the last day because they don't want to leave their friends. Without parents nearby to solve problems, they learn to solve them on their own, with trained counselors to coach them.

    Self-Advocacy

It is natural for parents to step in. At camp, students learn to ask for help themselves. Counselors teach them to speak up and work through problems, and the academic program shows them the value of structure. Campers bring those skills home.

    Academic Growth

For many students with learning differences, a program built for them is the first time they have been on a level playing field. Classrooms at home can leave them feeling isolated and frustrated. Our summer classrooms are welcoming and challenging. Small classes give each camper the attention they need, and teachers help them find their strengths and embrace how they learn.

    New Talents

Camp is a fresh start. Some activities may not be available at a student's home school, or a student may not have been eligible because of grades. At camp, students try something new every day, including soccer, basketball, lacrosse, rugby, dodgeball, archery, gaga ball, creek walks, arts and crafts, Lego robotics, and a slip-and-slide.

    More Than Summer School

The Gow School Summer Program is a five-week program for students with academic challenges or language-based learning differences, and it is a summer they will remember.
