David and Sloan Hunter started looking at boarding schools when their son Matt was struggling and his school couldn't meet his needs. The school that fit him best was 2,500 miles from home in Washington State. They sent Matt ('19) across the country to Gow, and they say they haven't regretted it.
Staying Close from Far Away
The distance was hard. The Hunters expected the travel to take time and planning, and it did. They can't drop in for a quick visit, so they rely on video calls scheduled around Matt's day. Seeing him, not just hearing him, helps them tell how he is doing.
Here is their advice for families coming from far away.
1. Read the Handbook
The Student and Parent Handbook was their most important resource. They read it three or four times. Its packing list covers everything. They bought most of Matt's academic dress from one catalog retailer, and the dorm and school supplies were easy to find.
2. Ship Early
They shipped dorm supplies, school supplies, and casual clothes in two large boxes and packed academic dress in one suitcase. They underestimated the eight-day shipping time and nearly missed move-in day. Send boxes early.
3. Give Yourself a Few Days to Explore
The family flew into Buffalo three days before move-in. They worried they had come too early, but the extra time turned out to be a gift. They explored East Aurora, South Wales, and the nearby ski areas Matt could visit, which helped him settle in and connected the family to the community. Matt even met his roommate before move-in day.
Three Months In
Three months after arriving, Matt had settled in. He says Gow is structured unlike any school he has attended, and he believes it will help him succeed.
